An automobile exhaust system has several functions. Originally, it was used for silencing the noise caused by high pressure exhaust gases leaving the engine and for transporting these hot and toxic gases away from the driver's compartment. The automotive muffler has to be able to allow the passage of exhaust gases whilst restricting the transmission of sound. The durability of that part of the exhaust muffler is therefore crucial. Hence one of important factor for durability is its resonance and corresponding mode shapes. The numerical method involves exhaust muffler design by modeling tool CATIA and meshing of the model is done by using Altair's pre-processing tool HyperMesh. Normal modal analysis is performed by using Msc Nastran.. The results are viewed through Altair's post-processing tool HyperView. The experimental method involves experiment is to conduct an test on a muffler system. For this impact test, an impact hammer was used to provide the input force and an tri-axial accelerometer was used to measure the output response. Aluminum alloys are widely used in aerospace and automobile industries due to their low density and good mechanical properties, better corrosion resistance and wear, low thermal coefficient of expansion as compared to conventional metals and alloys. The excellent mechanical properties of these materials and relatively low production cost make them a very attractive candidate for a variety of applications both from scientific and technological viewpoints. In the present investigation an attempt has been made on the study of performance characteristics of Al 6061 reinforcing with varying SiC content composite for varying process parameters. The composite is prepared by stir casting process in an electric melting furnace. The experimental study is performed varying wt % of SiC, temperature and time .The design of experiment approach was employed to acquire data in controlled way using Taguchi method. An orthogonal array and analysis of variance were employed to optimize the performance characteristics of Al 6061- SiC composite. For multi objective optimization Taguchi with Grey Relational Analysis method used for getting optimum combination. Experimental verification is carried out.

In this book, an experimental investigation has been carried out in hot turning of stainless steel bar on Lathe using Carbide tool. The work demonstrates the best process environment which could simultaneously satisfy requirements of both quality as well as productivity with special emphasis on maximizing material removal rate and minimizing surface roughness.

Central to the competitiveness of Rio Tinto Alcan and other aluminum manufacturers, is the quantitative linkage between products and the processes by which they are made. This type of activity has gained attention internationally and there are significant programs underway to develop through process models for various metallurgical fabrication processes. Inherently, the need for these types of models is that the properties of the metal products depend on the microstructure of the material which in turn is a complex function of composition, grain size and orientation, distribution of phases and precipitates and its thermo-mechanical history. The development of a particular microstructure and the desired properties in an industrial process however is less than straightforward because the latter usually involves a complex deformation and temperature path which can be very different through the thickness of the material depending on its location. This book describes the development of a mathematical model and experimental study for the material flow and microstructure changes during extrusion of AA3003 aluminum alloy which is used for manufacturing of automobile heat exchangers.
