A locally fabricated Brake Pad Test Rig was successfully used to evaluate the wear rate and braking effectiveness of two samples of automobile disc brake pads at various speeds and braking forces. Detailed design analysis of the test rig, which was also used to determine the average stopping time at a constant pressure of 10bar, and subsequently, at a constant speed of 980rpm, is presented in this work. Results obtained from the performance test carried out on the rig show the functionality of the test rig.

Aluminum is a lightweight material. Its strength, stiffness, hardness and wear resistance can be improved by adding ceramic particles like SiC, Al2O3 and TiB2. Aerospace, aeronautics and automobile engineering components are very much depend on the composite like aluminium based SiC particulates reinforced metal matrix composites. There is a challenge of the addition and uniform distribution of SiC particles in an aluminium matrix in the casting process. Hardness improves due to the addition of SiC particle in an aluminium matrix which is different from individual matrices. Hardness and Wear resistance will increase by increasing SiC particles because it is harder than other ceramic particles. In our work, relatively low cost method of Stir casting for producing Al based SiC metal matrix composite has been taken. Different particle size (53 µm, 53 µm, 74 µm, 104 µm) of SiC is used to compare the quality of the product. Wear resistance and hardness property increases at 9% SiC in Aluminum matrices. Distribution of the SiC particle in the matrix and SEM micrograph of worn surface of the Al-9%SiC at different load and different speed condition has also been investigated.

The microstructure and mechanical properties are investigated on the developed alloys. Microstructures are investigated by optical microscopy phases and the alloy compositions were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscope.

For more than a century monolithic graphite and metal-graphite brushes have been implemented with great success in electric current transfer applications such as electric train motors, high power DC current generators, aircraft actuators, automobile fuel pumps, and wind turbines among many others . Modern trends toward greater efficiency and demand for greater power output require higher current density and lower brush contact resistance than these brushes can provide due to relatively high bulk material resistances and operating temperatures. So the question is, why after such a low wear rate & various sophisticated overhead wire geometry measurement systems used during maintenance, wire gets failed? Till now the design of the contact wire is strength based, this approach suffers from the drawback that it does not considers the existence of cracks. There are various possibilities of existence of crack, some of them are: i) void (a crack nucleation point) may originate in the material during manufacturing, ii) a micro scratch may develop at the clamps/gripping points and iii) a micro scratch may also develop during installation or maintenance due to human error/ignorance.
